Zmutt

Zmutt is a small, high-alpine village located in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,900 meters (6,200 feet), it is part of the municipality of Zermatt, though it retains a distinct character. Zmutt is accessible by a scenic walking path from the main resort town of Zermatt or by a small shuttle bus service during the summer months.

Historically, Zmutt was a more significant settlement than Zermatt itself. Its name is derived from the Old High German word "Zmutt," meaning "among the cedars," referring to the ancient stone pine forests that once surrounded the area. The village is known for its well-preserved traditional wooden houses, some dating back to the 16th century, and its picturesque chapels. The Zmutt waterfall is a popular natural attraction nearby.

The village offers stunning panoramic views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding peaks of the Swiss Alps. In recent decades, Zmutt has become a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers seeking a quieter alpine experience away from the bustling center of Zermatt.
