Gorner
Gorner is a Swiss toponym used for several geographic features in the Valais canton of the Swiss Alps, especially around Zermatt and the Mattertal valley. The best known are the Gorner Glacier and the Gornergrat ridge. Gorner Glacier is a significant glacier on the northern slopes of the Monte Rosa massif. It drains toward the Mattertal and is easily observed from the surrounding ridges and viewpoint routes, including the Gornergrat overlook. Gornergrat is a prominent rocky ridge rising above Zermatt, southwest of the Matterhorn. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and is the terminus of the Gornergrat Bahn, a cog railway that climbs from Zermatt to the ridge, popular with hikers and tourists. The name Gorner is used in tourism and geographic references in the region; the glacier and ridge are among the principal landmarks associated with Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
