Zkomplikovali

Zkomplikovali is the past tense form of the Czech verb zkomplikovat, meaning to make something more complicated or to complicate. The verb is perfective and is used to describe an action that results in a more complex or problematic situation. The prefix z- signals a turning point or completion of an action, and the base komplikovat means to complicate; together they express that something has become more intricate as a result of the action.

Usage of zkomplikovali occurs in journalism, politics, business, and everyday language to indicate that a situation was made harder to resolve or understand by someone’s actions. It often carries a negative evaluation of those actions. The form is used with a plural subject, for example: zkomplikovali situaci (they have complicated the situation). Other person-number forms exist as well: zkomplikovala (she complicated), zkomplikovalo (it complicated), and zkomplikovali (they complicated).

Examples include phrases such as: “Nové rozhodnutí zkomplikovalo ekonomickou situaci,” meaning the new decision has complicated the economic situation; or “Stávka zkomplikovala dodávky,” meaning the strike has complicated deliveries. In neutral reporting, zkomplikovali simply describes that some actors caused additional complexity or difficulty, without prescribing a specific moral judgment. The term is common in descriptive, analytical, and evaluative contexts where causation of increased complexity is being discussed.
