Zielreiz

Zielreiz is a term used in psychology and related disciplines to denote the specific stimulus that serves as the target of a task or signals the desired response. The word combines Ziel (goal) and Reiz (stimulus or cue), and it is commonly used in German-language experimental literature to describe the item or cue toward which a participant should orient attention or toward which a response is directed.

In experimental paradigms such as visual search, the Zielreiz is the item participants must locate. In cueing and attention studies, it is the stimulus that indicates where to attend or where to respond. In operant conditioning or reinforcement-learning tasks, the Zielreiz may function as the cue that predicts reinforcement or as the target outcome that marks a successful trial. In saccade, reaching, or go/no-go tasks, it defines the spatial or motor target.

Properties of the Zielreiz, such as color, shape, brightness, and salience, influence performance measures including reaction time, accuracy, learning rate, and error patterns. Researchers control these properties to create stable task conditions and to study attentional selection, perception, and decision processes. In multi-element displays, there may be several Zielreize corresponding to different responses or outcomes, sometimes with varying reward magnitudes or motivational value.
