Zermelos

Zermelos is a fictional town and municipality in the northern highlands of Veridia. It lies along the Zerno River and sits on a high terrace above surrounding farmland, featuring a temperate climate with distinct seasons. The town comprises a historic old town and a more modern district surrounding a central market square.

History and setting: Zermelos was established in the 12th century by settlers from the northern hills and developed as a regional market town and fortress site. It grew through the medieval era, endured regional conflicts, and was modernized after the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century. The fortress, once a defensive stronghold, has been preserved and repurposed as a cultural center.

Demographics and governance: The municipality has a population of about 12,000. The community is predominantly Veridian-speaking with a minority of Elvian speakers. Zermelos is governed by a mayor and a 14-member council within Veridia’s national framework.

Economy: The local economy relies on services, agriculture (notably wine and grain), and small-scale manufacturing. Tourism is driven by the fortress, the historic guild hall, and the riverside promenade.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include Zermelos Fortress, the Cathedral of Saint Mira, and the Old Market Square. The town hosts an annual Festival of Light in autumn and maintains several craft guilds.

Education and transport: Zermelos hosts a Technical College and a branch campus of Veridia University for applied arts. It is connected by a regional road network and a revived rail line that serves regional travel.
