Zeolitecatalyzed refers to chemical reactions that are facilitated or accelerated by zeolites acting as catalysts. Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicate minerals with a unique porous structure. This porous structure provides a large internal surface area and well-defined molecular-sized channels and cages, which are crucial for their catalytic activity. These internal cavities can selectively adsorb reactant molecules, bringing them into close proximity and orienting them in a way that favors the desired reaction.

The catalytic properties of zeolites stem from their acidic sites, which can be either Brønsted acid sites (protons) or Lewis acid sites (electron-deficient metal cations). These acid sites can protonate reactants, abstract hydride ions, or coordinate with heteroatoms, thereby initiating or promoting chemical transformations. The size and shape of the zeolite pores also play a significant role, enabling shape selectivity. This means that only molecules of a certain size and shape can enter the zeolite pores, react, and exit, leading to the formation of specific products while excluding others.

Zeolitecatalyzed reactions are widely employed in various industrial processes, particularly in the petrochemical industry. Examples include catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons to produce gasoline, isomerization of alkanes, alkylation, and xylene production. Their high thermal stability, regenerability, and tunable acidity make them versatile and environmentally friendly catalysts for a broad range of organic syntheses. The specific type of zeolite used, such as ZSM-5, Y zeolite, or mordenite, is chosen based on the required pore dimensions and acidity for a particular reaction.
