ZentralKatalanisch

ZentralKatalanisch, commonly rendered as Central Catalan, is a term used in German-language linguistic literature to denote the central group of Catalan dialects. It covers varieties spoken in the central region of Catalonia, especially around Barcelona and the adjacent inland areas.

Geographically, ZentralKatalanisch includes the Barcelona metropolitan area and nearby provinces, with subdialects such as Barceloní and inland Central Catalan varieties. It forms the linguistic core from which Standard Catalan has been developed.

While sharing core vocabulary and grammar with other Catalan dialects, Central Catalan displays regional phonological and lexical differences and shows internal variation across towns. Mutual intelligibility remains high with neighboring dialect groups.

Standard Catalan, used in education, media, and official communication, is largely based on Central Catalan varieties. The central dialects influence national and regional language policy and are strongly associated with Catalan identity in Catalonia.
