Zehengrundgelenks, also known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is a complex joint located at the side of the skull, connecting the mandible (lower jawbone) to the temporal bone. It allows for the movement of the mandible, enabling functions such as chewing, speaking, and yawning. The TMJ is a synovial joint, meaning it contains a synovial cavity filled with synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and reduces friction during movement.

The TMJ is composed of several structures, including the articular disc, which acts as a shock absorber, and the condylar process of the mandible, which articulates with the temporal bone. The joint is surrounded by muscles, including the masseter, temporalis, and medial pterygoid muscles, which facilitate jaw movement and generate chewing forces.

Disorders of the TMJ, known as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), can cause pain, clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw. These disorders can be caused by various factors, including trauma, arthritis, or muscle dysfunction. Treatment options for TMD may include pain management, physical therapy, or in some cases, surgical intervention.
