Zayre

Zayre was an American discount department store chain that operated in the United States from the mid-1950s into the 1990s. The chain was founded in 1956 by members of the Zayre family in the Boston area and expanded to numerous locations across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the Midwest. Zayre offered a mix of clothing, home goods, and other merchandise at discount prices, positioning itself against other value-oriented retailers of the era.

In 1988, Ames Department Stores, Inc. acquired Zayre for a value intended to broaden its regional footprint. After the acquisition, most Zayre locations were converted to Ames-branded stores or otherwise retired from the Zayre name over the following years. The Zayre brand gradually disappeared from retail signage and branding by the mid-1990s, with many former stores closing or being repurposed under different banners.
