Zaskarony

Zaskarony is a small rural municipality in the fictional nation of Verdania. It is situated in the northern lowlands along the Zor River, covering 62 square kilometers. The landscape includes rolling meadows, scattered woodlands, and a network of irrigation channels.

Zaskarony has its origins as a market village dating to the 15th century and developed around a river crossing. It gained official municipal status in 1892. The name is said to come from the Verdani language, meaning “sunlit hill.”

Geographically, Zaskarony lies at about 150 meters above sea level and experiences a moderate maritime climate with cool winters and warm summers. A wetlands area lies near the eastern edge of the municipality, aided by the river’s irrigation system.

Demographics and governance: As of 2020, the population was about 1,800. Local government consists of a five-seat municipal council led by an elected mayor. The dominant language is Verdani, with small communities speaking neighboring dialects.

Economy and culture: The economy centers on agriculture—grains, dairy, and fruit production—and small-scale crafts. Tourism is modest, focused on countryside lodging and the annual harvest festival held in autumn. Notable cultural sites include an historic Old Mill and a 19th-century church.

Transport and infrastructure: Zaskarony is connected by regional roads to nearby towns, with a limited public bus service. Utilities and basic services are provided by the municipal administration in collaboration with provincial authorities.
