Zajlóak

The zajlóak are a small, semi-aquatic mammal described in the fictional ecology of the archipelago of Zajlóia. The name derives from zajló, a local word meaning “loud” or “roaring,” together with the plural suffix -ak, reflecting their notable vocalizations.

Adults measure about 40–60 cm in body length, with a 4–8 cm tail and a mass of 2–4 kg. They have dense brown-gray fur, a broad snout, and webbed hind feet, adaptations suited to a life in and around water. A faint neck crest appears during the breeding season.

Zajlóak are endemic to freshwater wetlands, especially marshes and river deltas along Zajlóia’s eastern coast. They prefer emergent vegetation such as reeds and cattails and are rarely found above about 150 meters in elevation.

Behaviorally, zajlóak are primarily nocturnal and typically solitary or living in small family groups. They are territorial and communicate with a combination of whistles, chuckles, and low roars. Their diet consists of aquatic invertebrates, small fish, tadpoles, and fruit, collected by dabbling in shallow waters and by foraging along the water’s edge. Sensory cues from whiskers and keen hearing aid in detecting prey in murky waters.

Reproduction occurs in the spring, with litters of 2–4 offspring. Gestation is around 60 days, and altricial young are cared for by the mother for 6–8 weeks, reaching independence after several months.

Conservation within the fictional world of Zajlóia suggests stable populations overall, though local declines can occur due to wetland drainage and pollution. The zajlóak feature in local folklore as symbols of resilience and communal cooperation.
