Zaelas

Zaelas is a fictional city-state in the coastal region of the continent of Lyria. It functions as a major trading hub and cultural meeting point for maritime communities. Its streets are known for harbor markets, guild houses, and a long association with seamanship and crafts.

Located on a natural harbor, the city is built on limestone bluffs overlooking sea lanes. The climate is temperate, with dry summers and wet winters, influenced by maritime air currents that moderate temperatures.

Zaelas began as a cluster of fishing outposts in the 8th or 9th century and evolved into a city-state through a series of trade alliances. It gained influence by controlling harbor dues and merchant fleets. In later centuries it faced rival city-states, wars, and disruptions from piracy, but retained autonomy through diplomacy and naval strength.

The government is a Merchant Council, elected by guilds and leading merchants. The council appoints magistrates to administer cities and ports. Society is cosmopolitan, with diverse languages due to trade; common tongue is Zaelan, with other languages in use among merchants and sailors.

The economy centers on port trade, shipbuilding, and crafts such as glasswork and textiles. The annual Tide Market and the Festival of Lanterns are notable cultural events. Landmarks include the Lighthouse of Oran and the Old Docks, as well as a city library and guild halls.
