Zöldágtörés

Zöldágtörés is a Hungarian folk ritual that centers on the breaking of a green branch as a marker of spring and new growth. The term derives from zöldág, meaning green branch, and törés, meaning breaking. The practice reflects elements of older agricultural fertility rites and, in some regions, has merged with Christian spring celebrations around Palm Sunday, illustrating the syncretism common in Hungarian folk culture.

In typical practice, participants choose a fresh, flexible green branch, often willow or similar material. The act of breaking is ceremonial and its exact form varies regionally: the broken pieces may be kept at home, tied to doors or beams, or used in small processions and blessings. The ritual is commonly performed by children or youths within a community, sometimes accompanied by songs or simple festive activities. Symbolically, zöldágtörés is associated with renewal, protection against misfortune, and the welcoming of spring.

Today, zöldágtörés is primarily of ethnographic and cultural heritage interest.
