Traditional bleaching processes often involve chlorine-based chemicals that can create toxic byproducts like dioxins. Environmental bleaching seeks to replace or significantly reduce the use of these hazardous chemicals.

Common alternatives employed in environmental bleaching include hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and enzymes. Hydrogen peroxide is a widely used oxidant that decomposes into water and oxygen, making it a more environmentally friendly option. Ozone is a powerful oxidant that can effectively bleach materials and then dissipates. Enzyme-based bleaching uses biological catalysts to achieve the desired lightening effect, often at lower temperatures and with less water. The development and adoption of environmental bleaching are driven by increasing environmental regulations, consumer demand for sustainable products, and industry efforts to improve ecological footprints.
