Ympäristönanalyysi, often translated as environmental analysis, is a systematic process of examining the factors that can influence an organization's operations, strategies, and overall success. This analysis typically encompasses both internal and external environments. The internal environment refers to the organization's resources, capabilities, structure, culture, and management. The external environment, on the other hand, includes all forces outside the organization that can affect its performance.

Key components of external environmental analysis often include PESTLE analysis, which examines Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors. Understanding these macro-environmental forces helps identify opportunities and threats. For instance, changes in government regulations (Political and Legal) can significantly impact a business, while economic downturns (Economic) can reduce consumer spending. Social trends (Social) can alter consumer preferences, and technological advancements (Technological) can create new markets or render existing products obsolete. Environmental concerns (Environmental) are increasingly important, influencing consumer choices and regulatory frameworks.

Analyzing the competitive environment is also crucial. This involves understanding the strengths and weaknesses of competitors, the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers, and the threat of new entrants and substitute products, often framed by Porter's Five Forces model. By thoroughly understanding both the internal and external environments, organizations can develop more effective strategies, make better-informed decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances, thereby enhancing their long-term viability and competitiveness.
