Ylipäästöjen

Ylipäästöjen refers to the concept of overshooting environmental limits or thresholds. It is often discussed in the context of planetary boundaries, a framework that identifies critical Earth system processes and their safe operating spaces. When human activities push one or more of these boundaries beyond their safe limits, it is considered an ylipäästö.

The planetary boundaries framework currently identifies nine such boundaries: climate change, novel entities (e.g., chemical pollution), stratospheric ozone depletion, atmospheric aerosol loading, ocean acidification, biogeochemical flows (nitrogen and phosphorus cycles), freshwater use, land-system change, and biosphere integrity (functional and genetic diversity). Exceeding these boundaries can lead to abrupt or irreversible environmental changes that affect the stability of the Earth system.
