Yliäänilennot refers to supersonic flight, which is flight exceeding the speed of sound. The speed of sound varies depending on factors like temperature, altitude, and the composition of the atmosphere, but it is commonly referenced at sea level in dry air as approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) or Mach 1. Supersonic flight is characterized by the creation of a sonic boom, a shock wave generated when an object travels faster than sound.

The first aircraft to officially break the sound barrier was the Bell X-1, piloted by Chuck Yeager in 1947. Since then, supersonic technology has been developed for both military and civilian applications. Military aircraft, such as fighter jets, routinely fly at supersonic speeds for tactical advantages. In the civilian realm, the Concorde was the most famous supersonic passenger airliner, operating from 1976 to 2003. Its operational lifespan was marked by high operating costs and environmental concerns, particularly regarding noise pollution from sonic booms over populated areas.

The challenges associated with supersonic flight include increased drag, which requires more powerful engines and greater fuel consumption. Furthermore, the sonic boom poses a significant obstacle to widespread civilian supersonic travel over land, as regulations often prohibit supersonic flight below certain altitudes to mitigate noise disturbances. Research and development continue in the field, with efforts focused on reducing the intensity of sonic booms and improving the efficiency and environmental impact of supersonic aircraft for potential future applications in commercial aviation and high-speed transport.
