Ylähengitystieinfektioita, commonly known as upper respiratory tract infections, are infections affecting the nose, throat, sinuses, and larynx. They are predominantly caused by viruses, although bacteria can also be a contributing factor. The most frequent type of ylähengitystieinfektio is the common cold, which typically manifests with symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and mild body aches. Other common ylähengitystieinfektioita include influenza (flu), sinusitis, and pharyngitis (sore throat).

Transmission of these infections usually occurs through airborne droplets expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Direct contact with contaminated surfaces followed by touching the eyes, nose, or mouth can also lead to infection. While most ylähengitystieinfektioita are self-limiting and resolve within a week or two, complications can arise, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. These complications may include ear infections, bronchitis, or pneumonia.

Diagnosis is typically based on clinical symptoms. Treatment focuses on symptom relief and supportive care, as antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections. Rest, adequate fluid intake, and over-the-counter medications for pain and fever are common recommendations. Prevention strategies include good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and vaccination, particularly for influenza. Public health measures and awareness campaigns play a role in limiting the spread of these widespread infections.
