Yksivaihehöyrystimet, or single-stage evaporators, are heat exchange devices used to convert a liquid into a vapor. In a single-stage design, the entire evaporation process occurs within a single vessel or section. The liquid is introduced, heat is applied, and the resulting vapor is removed, while the concentrated liquid remains. This contrasts with multi-stage evaporators, which employ a series of evaporators to achieve greater energy efficiency.

These devices are commonly employed in various industrial applications, including food and beverage processing, chemical manufacturing, and wastewater treatment. Their primary function is often to remove water or other solvents from a solution, thereby concentrating the desired product or preparing waste streams for further treatment. The simplicity of their design makes them relatively cost-effective and easy to operate and maintain.

The operation of a single-stage evaporator involves supplying heat to the liquid, typically through a heating jacket or internal coils. As the liquid reaches its boiling point, it begins to vaporize. The vapor is then separated from the liquid and can be condensed or used directly, depending on the process. The concentrated liquid, now with a higher solute concentration, is discharged from the evaporator. Factors such as the type of liquid, desired concentration, and available energy sources influence the specific design and operating parameters of a single-stage evaporator.
