Yksittäisketjuinen

Yksittäisketjuinen is a Finnish term used in chemistry to describe a molecule that consists of a single continuous chain of atoms, typically a straight, unbranched carbon skeleton. The defining feature is the absence of side chains or branching off the main chain. In practice, the term is often used synonymously with lineaarinen or lineaarinen isomer when referring to hydrocarbons, although in modern texts lineaarisuus is more common.

In hydrocarbons, a yksittäisketjuinen (unbranched) chain contrasts with haara ketjuinen (branched) structures, where one or more substituents form side chains that create branches from the main chain. A classic example is n-pentaani, a yksittäisketjuinen alkaani, versus isopentaani, which is branched.

The concept also appears in polymer science and materials contexts, where chain architecture (linear vs branched) influences physical properties such as boiling or melting points, density and viscosity. Generally, unbranched alkanes exhibit higher boiling points than their branched isomers due to greater surface area and stronger intermolecular interactions, while branching can reduce packing efficiency and melting points.
