Yksikkönormiset is a term used in various fields, particularly in mathematics, statistics, and physics, to describe vectors or other mathematical objects that have been scaled to have a unit length. This process, known as normalization, is crucial for many algorithms and analyses as it removes the influence of magnitude and emphasizes direction or relative proportions.

In linear algebra, a unit vector, often denoted by a hat symbol (e.g., $\hat{v}$), is obtained by dividing a non-zero vector $v$ by its magnitude (or norm), denoted as $||v||$. The formula for normalization is $\hat{v} = \frac{v}{||v||}$. The resulting vector $\hat{v}$ has a magnitude of 1, meaning $|| \hat{v} || = 1$. This is particularly useful when representing directions independently of distance.

In machine learning and data science, normalization is a common preprocessing step. For instance, feature scaling can involve normalizing numerical features to a range between 0 and 1, or to have a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1 (standardization). These methods ensure that features with larger values do not disproportionately influence the outcome of an algorithm.
