Yksikkökvaternioille refers to unit quaternions in mathematics. A quaternion is a number system that extends complex numbers, composed of four components: a real part and three imaginary parts. A unit quaternion is a quaternion whose norm, or magnitude, is equal to one. This property makes them particularly useful in representing rotations in three-dimensional space.

The general form of a quaternion is q = a + bi + cj + dk, where a, b, c, and d are real numbers, and i, j, and k are imaginary units satisfying specific multiplication rules: i^2 = j^2 = k^2 = ijk = -1. The norm of a quaternion q is given by ||q|| = sqrt(a^2 + b^2 + c^2 + d^2). For a unit quaternion, this norm is always 1.

The primary application of unit quaternions is in computer graphics, robotics, and aerospace engineering for representing and performing rotations. Unlike Euler angles, which can suffer from gimbal lock, unit quaternions provide a smooth and unambiguous way to describe orientations. A rotation by an angle theta around an axis defined by a unit vector (x, y, z) can be represented by the unit quaternion q = cos(theta/2) + sin(theta/2)(xi + yj + zk). Multiplying quaternions corresponds to composing rotations, and the inverse of a unit quaternion is simply its conjugate, making rotation reversal straightforward. Their efficiency and stability have made them a standard tool for handling 3D rotations.
