Yhdistelmäportteja, or combination locks, are mechanical locking devices that are opened by a sequence of numbers or symbols. These sequences are often referred to as combinations. Unlike key-operated locks, combination locks do not require a physical key to operate.

The most common type of combination lock is the dial lock, which features a rotating dial marked with numbers. The user manipulates the dial by turning it left, right, and left again to specific numbers in the correct order to disengage the locking mechanism. This type of lock is frequently found on safes, padlocks, and lockers.

Another variation is the push-button combination lock, which uses a series of buttons that must be pressed in the correct sequence. These are often seen in electronic door locks or certain types of luggage locks. Digital combination locks, a more modern iteration, utilize a keypad and often require a PIN (Personal Identification Number) to be entered. Some of these may also incorporate features like fingerprint scanners for enhanced security.

The security of a combination lock depends on the number of possible combinations and the complexity of the sequence. A lock with a longer and more varied combination is generally more secure than one with a short, simple sequence. The mechanism within the lock typically involves a series of tumblers or wheels that align when the correct combination is entered, allowing the shackle or bolt to retract.
