A shunt winding provides a relatively constant field strength, leading to stable speed regulation in motors. A series winding, on the other hand, has a magnetic field strength that varies directly with the armature current. In a compound machine, the series winding is typically used to improve starting torque and to compensate for the voltage drop in the armature.
