Xándar

Xándar is a fictional city and regional capital in the Valaran archipelago, used here for explanatory purposes. It sits on the Xandra River and the Serin Gulf, forming a major node in regional trade. The city has a temperate climate with moderate rainfall.

Founded as a trading post in the 10th century by merchants from the highlands, Xándar grew into a fortified town by the 12th century. It prospered under merchant republics and expanded with industrialization in the 19th century. It has been a cultural and commercial center for the valley region.

The city is governed by a democratically elected council and a mayor, serving four-year terms. It is the provincial capital of Xandar Province within the Valaran Confederation.

As of 2023, the population is about 240,000. The city is ethnically diverse, with Xandari as the primary language and Common as a lingua franca; education is conducted mainly in Xandari.

The economy centers on logistics, services, and light manufacturing. The port handles bulk cargo and containerized goods; rail and river networks connect Xándar to inland markets. Tourism relies on historic districts, markets, and river cruises.

Notable sites include the Old Gate, Market Hall, and the Library of Xándar. The annual Harvest Festival is a major cultural event. The city hosts a vibrant street-food scene and several neighborhood theaters.

The University of Xándar and several specialized institutes provide programs in engineering, humanities, and environmental studies.

Xándar is served by an international airport, regional rail links, a ferry network, and a city tram system.
