Xrayabsorptio, often referred to as X-ray absorption, is a fundamental phenomenon where X-rays lose energy as they pass through a material. This interaction occurs when photons from the X-ray beam are absorbed by the atoms within the material. The amount of X-ray absorption depends on several factors, primarily the atomic number of the elements composing the material, the density of the material, and the energy of the incident X-rays.

When an X-ray photon interacts with an atom, it can transfer its energy to an electron. If the photon's energy is sufficient to overcome the binding energy of an inner-shell electron (like a K or L shell electron), that electron can be ejected from the atom. This process is known as the photoelectric effect, and it is a major contributor to X-ray absorption, especially at lower X-ray energies. Alternatively, if the X-ray photon has enough energy, it can also interact with the nucleus, leading to Compton scattering, where the photon's direction and energy are altered, effectively reducing the transmitted beam intensity.

The energy at which X-ray absorption changes significantly is called an absorption edge. These edges correspond to the binding energies of electrons in specific atomic shells. When the incident X-ray energy matches an absorption edge, there is a sharp increase in absorption. This characteristic absorption is utilized in various analytical techniques, such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), to identify elements present in a sample and study their chemical environment. Understanding X-ray absorption is crucial in applications ranging from medical imaging and industrial radiography to materials science and astrophysics.
