Xiph

Xiph, formally the Xiph.Org Foundation, is a nonprofit organization that develops and maintains open multimedia formats and software. Its aim is to provide royalty-free components for audio and video encoding and to promote interoperability and open standards in digital media.

History and mission: Founded in the late 1990s by a community of developers, Xiph.org was established to counter proprietary codecs with open, patent-unencumbered alternatives. The foundation supports a collaborative ecosystem of software and documentation that can be freely used and modified.

Projects and formats: Xiph.org is best known for a suite of open technologies that work with the Ogg multimedia container. Ogg provides a flexible framework for storing multiple streams and codecs. Vorbis is an open audio codec designed to deliver high quality at low bitrates. Theora is an open video codec used with the Ogg container. Speex was developed for speech compression and has largely been superseded by Opus, a modern audio codec standardized for interactive speech and music and widely used in WebRTC and streaming. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) offers lossless compression for music and archival use. Opus, created in collaboration with the IETF, remains a cornerstone for low-latency audio over the Internet.

Software and licensing: The project supplies reference implementations, such as libogg, libvorbis, libtheora, and the FLAC library, under permissive open-source licenses. These components are cross-platform and widely adopted in open-source media players, browsers, and devices.
