Xaran

Xaran is a fictional coastal city-state located on the continent of Eldara, serving as the capital and economic hub of the Xaranian Confederacy. It sits on a natural harbor along the Sable Sea, with a temperate climate and surrounding agricultural plains.

Historically, Xaran was founded by rival merchant guilds in the early medieval era and grew into a thriving port city. It endured periods of external rule before attaining de facto autonomy in the 17th century and joining the confederacy in the 18th century.

The city operates as a municipal republic, led by a mayor and a city council, with representation in the confederacy’s central assembly. Its economy centers on port activities, shipbuilding, and logistics, complemented by textiles and light manufacturing. Xaran University, established in the 19th century, specializes in marine science and engineering.

Culturally, Xaran hosts the Lantern Market Festival, a seaside tradition attracting visitors from across Eldara. The population is multilingual, with Xaranan as the historic language and several regional tongues in use. Architecture blends medieval stonework with contemporary glass and steel, reflecting the city’s historical layers and modern development.

Prominent landmarks include the Old Gate, Pearl Wharf, the Lumen Library, and the University Clock Tower. Transportation relies on a deep-sea port, rail links to inland towns, and an international airport northeast of the city center. The population is about 320,000 and remains ethnically diverse.
