XX chromosomes are the sex chromosomes that typically determine femaleness in humans and many other animal species. Females possess two X chromosomes, denoted as XX, in each of their cells. This is in contrast to males, who typically have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, denoted as XY.

The X chromosome is a relatively large chromosome containing many genes. Some of these genes are directly involved in sexual development, while others are essential for general bodily functions. For instance, genes on the X chromosome play a role in the development of reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics. The Y chromosome, on the other hand, is smaller and carries fewer genes, with the SRY gene being a key component that initiates male development.

The inheritance of sex chromosomes occurs during reproduction. A female produces egg cells, each containing one X chromosome. A male produces sperm cells, which can carry either an X or a Y chromosome. When a sperm fertilizes an egg, the resulting offspring inherits one X chromosome from the mother and either an X chromosome (resulting in XX, a female) or a Y chromosome (resulting in XY, a male) from the father.

Variations in the number of X chromosomes can occur, leading to certain genetic conditions. For example, Turner syndrome occurs in individuals with only one X chromosome (XO), typically resulting in female development. Klinefelter syndrome occurs in individuals with an extra X chromosome (XXY), typically resulting in male development. These conditions highlight the complex role of X chromosomes in sex determination and development.
