XRechnung is Germany's national standard for electronic invoicing to public authorities and is designed to comply with EU e-invoicing guidelines, including EN 16931. PEPPOL supplies the network and transport layer; it provides interoperable delivery across borders and public bodies across participating European countries.

The XML document contains structured data such as invoice header, supplier and buyer identifiers, payment terms, and line items with description, quantity, unit price, tax, and totals. It uses the XRechnung XML schema and commonly aligns with PEPPOL BIS specifications for invoicing payloads.
