Wolkendek

Wolkendek is a meteorological term that describes a continuous, horizontally extended layer of cloud that covers a portion or the entire sky and has a relatively uniform base and top. The term emphasizes the deck-like character of the cloud sheet, as opposed to isolated clouds or vertical cloud towers. A wolkendek can range from a thin stratiform layer to a thick overcast, and its base and top can occur at a variety of altitudes.

In weather terminology, cloud decks are often categorized by their base height and the cloud type forming the deck. Low decks typically have bases close to the surface and are commonly formed by stratocumulus or stratus clouds; middle and high decks involve altostratus, nimbostratus, or cirrostratus/altocumulus clouds at higher altitudes. The presence of a wolkendek affects visibility and ceiling, which matters for aviation, transportation, and outdoor planning. Observations come from ground-based weather stations, satellite imagery, radar, and radiosonde measurements.

Formation and effects: A wolkendek forms where moist air becomes saturated in a stable atmospheric layer, suppressing vertical mixing and leading to a uniform cloud sheet. Depending on thickness and moisture, it may produce light drizzle or continuous precipitation and can reduce solar radiation and alter temperature patterns.

Etymology and usage: The word wolkendek combines the Dutch words for cloud (wolk) and deck (dek). In meteorology and weather reporting, it is used to describe the structure and altitude of cloud cover, alongside related terms such as wolkendekking and cloud-base height.
