Wohnsitznachweis

Wohnsitznachweis is a document that confirms the registered address of an individual. In Germany, the term is commonly used for the Meldebescheinigung, a certificate issued by the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt) after a person completes the Anmeldung at the new address. The Anmeldung is mandatory when moving into or within Germany and should normally be completed within two weeks; the landlord provides a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung to confirm tenancy.

The Meldebescheinigung lists the resident’s name, current address, and date of registration, and may include additional details such as date of birth. The document is typically issued by the municipality and can be required for a variety of administrative and private processes. It is often needed to open a bank account, obtain or renew a driver’s license, register for taxes, apply for social benefits, enroll at a university, or participate in elections. The specific validity period and requirements can vary by authority and purpose.

Alternative proofs of residence, such as recent utility bills, tenancy agreements, or bank statements showing the address, may be accepted in some cases, but many institutions prefer or require an official Meldebescheinigung issued by the municipality.
