Windowstyöpöytäympäristö, often translated as "Windows desktop environment" or "Windows user interface," refers to the graphical user interface (GUI) that Microsoft Windows operating systems use to present information and applications to the user. It is the primary way users interact with their computers. Key components include the desktop itself, the taskbar, the Start menu, windows for applications and files, icons, and the mouse pointer.

The desktop serves as the main workspace, displaying icons for frequently used programs and files, as well as the background image. The taskbar, typically located at the bottom of the screen, shows running applications, provides quick access to the Start menu, and displays system notifications. The Start menu is a central launching point for applications, system settings, and search functions.

Windows are the rectangular areas on the screen where applications run and documents are displayed. They can be resized, moved, minimized, maximized, and closed using a set of standard controls. Icons are small graphical representations of files, folders, and applications, which can be double-clicked to open them. The mouse pointer, controlled by a mouse or touchpad, is used to navigate and interact with these elements.

Over the years, the Windows desktop environment has evolved significantly with different versions introducing new visual styles, functionalities, and organizational methods. Each iteration aims to improve user experience, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal. The core concept, however, remains consistent: providing an intuitive and visually driven way for users to manage their digital tasks.
