Weltenburg

Weltenburg is a municipality in the district of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the Danube River, approximately 100 kilometers north of Munich. The village is most famous for its Benedictine monastery, Weltenburg Abbey. The abbey is one of the oldest monastic communities in Bavaria, founded around 600 AD.

The monastery is a significant landmark and a popular tourist destination. It is renowned for its Baroque abbey church, designed by the Asam brothers, which is considered a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The church's interior is elaborately decorated with frescoes and stucco work.

Adjacent to the abbey is the Weltenburg Narrows, a dramatic gorge where the Danube River carves its way through a limestone massif. The area is a nature reserve and offers scenic boat trips. Visitors can enjoy the unique landscape and the tranquility of the Danube valley.

Weltenburg Abbey also operates a brewery, which is considered the oldest monastic brewery in the world, dating back to 1050. The brewery produces the famous "Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel," a dark lager that is enjoyed locally and internationally. The monastic tradition of brewing continues to this day. The village itself is small and picturesque, complementing the grandeur of the abbey and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
