Welsh Americans are Americans who trace their ancestry to Wales, a historic nation in the United Kingdom. They are part of the broader British and Celtic heritage that contributed to the population and culture of early and modern America. Immigration from Wales occurred in several waves, beginning in the colonial era and continuing through the 19th century, often tied to economic opportunities in mining, industry, and transportation.

Historically, Welsh settlers established communities in multiple states, with a significant concentration in Pennsylvania’s coal regions in counties such as Schuylkill and Luzerne. In these areas Welsh families formed networks of worship, schooling, and mutual aid that helped sustain communities through difficult working and living conditions. Smaller Welsh communities appeared in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and later in California, Colorado, and other western states as labor demands drew people westward.

Cultural life in Welsh American communities frequently revolved around churches and chapels, including those associated with Calvinistic Methodism and Welsh Baptists. Religious and social organizations provided education, music, and charitable assistance. Welsh-language publications and annual cultural events, when possible, reflected a continuity of language and tradition and echoed the Welsh eisteddfod tradition in a American context.

Today, Welsh American identity is largely expressed through ancestry, genealogical research, and regional heritage organizations. Language use declined across generations, but some congregations and societies maintain Welsh liturgy, songs, and cultural practices, contributing to the broader mosaic of American regional and immigrant cultures.
