Wellbreiten

Wellbreiten is a fictional municipality in the northern lowlands of the continent of Aeloria, within the imagined state of Veridia. It lies along the Wellbach River and comprises the town of Wellbreiten and several surrounding hamlets. In 2022 the population was about 3,900. The local economy centers on agriculture—grain and dairy—supplemented by light manufacturing and a small services sector that serves residents and visitors.

The name derives from Old High German elements meaning "wide springs" or "broad wells," a reference to the area’s waterways and pastures.

The terrain is flat to gently rolling with fertile loam soils. The climate is temperate maritime, featuring mild summers and cool winters with evenly distributed precipitation. The Wellbach valley is bordered by low wooded hills to the north.

Wellbreiten is first documented in 1180, with market rights granted in 1304. It developed as an agricultural center within the Veridian duchy and gained rail connectivity in the late 19th century, spurring growth. Administrative reforms in the 1970s consolidated nearby villages into the municipality, reinforcing local services and planning.

Landmarks include St. Michael’s Church (14th century), the Wellbreiten Gate, and a timber-framed town hall dating to 1740. The annual harvest festival in September features local produce, crafts, and performances, reflecting the community's agrarian heritage.

Wellbreiten is governed by a 12-member municipal council elected for five-year terms, with a mayor at its head. Official languages are Veridian and German; education is provided by a primary school, a secondary school, and a small clinic.
