Weichteilverdacht

Weichteilverdacht refers to the suspicion of a tumor within the soft tissues of the body. Soft tissues include muscles, fat, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. While often associated with cancer, soft tissue tumors can also be benign (non-cancerous). The term "Verdacht" in German translates to "suspicion," indicating that a definitive diagnosis has not yet been made.

Symptoms can vary widely depending on the location, size, and type of the suspected tumor. Common signs include a palpable lump or swelling that may or may not be painful. Changes in skin color or texture over the lump, restricted movement in a nearby joint, or unexplained pain can also be indicators. The onset of symptoms can be gradual or sudden.

Diagnosis typically begins with a thorough medical history and physical examination. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI are crucial for visualizing the soft tissue mass and determining its characteristics. A biopsy, where a small sample of the tissue is removed and examined under a microscope, is usually necessary for a definitive diagnosis to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.

Treatment for soft tissue masses depends on whether the mass is benign or malignant, its size, location, and the patient's overall health. Benign tumors may require observation or surgical removal if they cause symptoms or are cosmetically undesirable. Malignant soft tissue tumors, known as sarcomas, often require a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Early detection and diagnosis are vital for optimal outcomes.
