Weeaboos

Weeaboo is a pejorative slang term used to describe non-Japanese people who are perceived to be overly obsessed with Japanese culture, particularly anime and manga. The term is often used dismissively and can carry negative connotations, implying that the individual's interest is superficial or uncritical. It is sometimes used interchangeably with "otaku," though otaku originally referred to someone with a passionate interest in any particular hobby, not exclusively Japanese media.

The origins of the term "weeaboo" are somewhat unclear, but it gained traction in online communities, particularly on imageboards like 4chan, in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The usage of the term often highlights perceived negative behaviors, such as an overly enthusiastic adoption of Japanese language phrases without proper context, an idealized or inaccurate view of Japanese society, and a disregard for the origin and creators of the media they consume.

While some individuals embrace the term ironically or even defiantly, it is generally considered an insult by those it is applied to.
