Wechselpräpositionen

Wechselpräpositionen are a group of prepositions in German that can govern either the dative or the accusative case, depending on the relation expressed. They indicate both location and direction, and thus require a case change when the situation changes from stationary to moving.

The main Wechselpräpositionen are an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor and zwischen. They can be used with either location (wo?) or direction (wohin?). The choice of case follows the rule: if there is movement toward a goal, the accusative is used; if there is no movement and the position is stationary, the dative is used. In practice, you determine the case by asking wohin? (movement) or wo? (location). For example: Ich gehe in das Haus (accusative, movement) versus Ich bin in dem Haus (dative, location). Contractions are common, as in ins Haus or im Haus.

Examples illustrate the pattern: Ich stelle den Stuhl auf den Tisch (accusative, direction). Ich stehe auf dem Tisch (dative, location). Er hängt das Bild an die Wand (accusative). Das Bild hängt an der Wand (dative). Note that some prepositions, like entlang, do not form a true Wechselpräposition and usually require accusative when used as a directional element.
