WeCom

WeCom, known in English as WeCom (formerly WeChat Work), is a business communication and office collaboration platform developed by Tencent. It integrates with the consumer WeChat ecosystem to enable enterprises to communicate with employees, manage workflows, and coordinate operations while maintaining separation between personal and corporate data.

History and context: WeCom was launched in 2016 as WeChat Work and was rebranded in 2020 to emphasize its enterprise focus and deeper integration with WeChat. It forms part of Tencent’s suite of enterprise services and is widely used by companies operating in China, including multinational firms with local operations.

Features: The platform provides corporate accounts that support internal and external messaging, group chats, and video meetings, along with calls, calendars, file sharing, cloud storage, and task management. It supports attendance tracking, leave requests, and approval workflows, in addition to a corporate directory and role-based access controls. WeCom offers APIs and app integrations through Tencent’s Open Platform, enabling third-party apps, bots, and automation. It supports multi-device use so users can stay connected on mobile, desktop, and web.

Security and governance: WeCom emphasizes data separation between organizations, access controls, and encryption in transit. It aligns with applicable regulations for enterprise data in its markets, and data ownership and processing are governed by each enterprise account.
