Originating from the Visayan region, particularly in the island of Cebu, it is deeply rooted in the indigenous defense techniques of the pre-colonial era. The name "waveleta" refers to the undulating, fluid movements characteristic of the style, while "lapú" is derived from the Visayan word for "fight" or "struggle," reflecting its combat-oriented nature.

Waveletalapú is often practiced with a *kampilan*, a curved sword historically used by the Visayans, though modern adaptations may also incorporate sticks, knives, or empty-hand techniques.
