Wavefunktioita, often translated as wave functions, are fundamental concepts in quantum mechanics. They are mathematical descriptions that encapsulate the quantum state of a particle or system. Unlike classical mechanics, where a particle's position and momentum can be known precisely at any given time, quantum mechanics describes these properties probabilistically. The wave function is the key to this probabilistic interpretation.

Specifically, the square of the magnitude of the wave function at a particular point in space and time gives the probability density of finding the particle at that location. This means that the wave function itself does not represent a physical wave in the traditional sense, but rather a wave of probability amplitude. The evolution of a wave function over time is governed by the Schrödinger equation, a cornerstone of quantum theory.

Wave functions possess properties like superposition, allowing a quantum system to exist in multiple states simultaneously until a measurement is made. They also exhibit interference, a phenomenon analogous to wave interference, where probabilities can either add up or cancel out depending on the path or state. The concept of wave functions is central to understanding phenomena such as quantum tunneling, atomic orbitals, and the behavior of subatomic particles.
