Wallbuilding refers to the construction of barriers, typically made of stone, brick, wood, or earth, to enclose an area, provide defense, or serve as a boundary. Historically, walls have played a crucial role in human civilization, serving a variety of purposes. In ancient times, defensive walls were essential for protecting settlements from invaders, as exemplified by the Great Wall of China or the walls of Jericho. These structures were often massive, employing advanced engineering for their era.

Beyond defense, walls have also been used for demarcation and containment. Property lines, agricultural fields, and even animal enclosures have relied on wall construction to define spaces and prevent movement. The materials and techniques used vary greatly depending on the available resources, climate, and the intended function of the wall. For instance, dry stone walls, built without mortar, are common in rural landscapes where stone is abundant, while mortar-bound brick or stone walls offer greater stability and permanence.

Garden walls, retaining walls, and decorative boundary walls are common features in urban and suburban environments. The principles of structural integrity and material selection remain important, but aesthetic considerations often play a larger role.
