WWIVnet
WWIVnet is a computer bulletin board system (BBS) software that was popular in the late 1980s and 1990s. It was originally developed by Jim Mills and released in 1987. WWIVnet was known for its robust feature set, including message boards, file areas, door games, and user chat. A key feature that distinguished WWIVnet was its integrated networking capability, allowing multiple BBS systems running WWIVnet to interconnect and share messages and files. This network, also referred to as WWIVnet, facilitated a sense of community among users across different physical locations. The software was highly configurable, allowing system operators to customize many aspects of their BBS. WWIVnet supported various modem speeds and communication protocols of its era. While its popularity waned with the rise of the internet, WWIVnet continued to be maintained and used by a dedicated community for many years. The development of WWIVnet eventually transitioned to an open-source model, allowing for continued community contributions.
