The concept is closely related to absolute humidity, which measures the actual amount of water vapor in the air, but it specifically quantifies the partial pressure contributed by water molecules.

Water vapor pressure is measured in units such as pascals (Pa) or hectopascals (hPa), though it is often expressed in relation to saturation pressure, which is the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a given temperature. Relative humidity, a commonly used metric, is derived from the ratio of current water vapor pressure to saturation pressure, expressed as a percentage.
