Vízhámor

Vízhámor is a Hungarian term that literally translates to "water hammer." In engineering and plumbing, it refers to a sudden surge in pressure within a pipe system. This phenomenon typically occurs when a valve is rapidly closed or opened, or when a pump is suddenly stopped or started. The inertia of the moving column of water, which is relatively incompressible, is abruptly halted or accelerated. This causes a shockwave to propagate through the fluid and the pipe walls.

The effects of vízhámor can range from a loud banging noise to more severe damage. Minor occurrences might be heard as a thud or a series of bangs within the pipes.
