Vélánami

Vélánami is a coastal town and municipality in the Coris region of the fictional country of Valéra. It sits on a sheltered peninsula and functions as a local administrative center for the surrounding coastal communities.

The name derives from the Vélánami language, meaning "bay of winds."

Geographically, Vélánami features a crescent shoreline, limestone cliffs, and two small beaches. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers.

Founded in the 12th century by fisher guilds, Vélánami developed as a trading port. The town expanded in the 19th century with steamship routes and was incorporated into Valéra's modern administration after World War II.

Today, fishing and aquaculture remain core industries, complemented by tourism and small-scale manufacturing. Local cooperatives promote sustainable practices and preserve traditional crafts such as net-weaving and woodworking.

The population speaks the national language of Valéra alongside the local Vélánami language. The community is diverse, with civic institutions reflecting maritime heritage. An annual Wind Festival highlights the town’s cultural and nautical traditions.

Vélánami is governed by a municipal council led by a mayor and belongs to the Coris Province, contributing representatives to the regional assembly.

Transport infrastructure includes a seaport, a regional road network, and Vélánami Airport (VLA) serving domestic flights. A local bus system connects the town center with surrounding villages.

Educational facilities comprise two primary schools, one secondary school, and a public library. A community center hosts cultural programs and language classes.

Notable sites include the Lantern Lighthouse, the Old Fort of Coris, and the Market Hall. Nearby estuary areas support migratory birds and coastal habitats.
