Védelem

Védelem is the Hungarian word for defense or protection. It denotes actions, measures, and policies aimed at safeguarding people, property, information, or a state’s sovereignty and interests. The concept appears across military, civil, and civilian contexts and includes both preventive and reactive aspects.

Contexts:

- National defense and security: védelem commonly refers to defending the country, its institutions, and critical infrastructure, and is connected to defence policy and armed forces.

- Civil protection and disaster management: in Hungary civil protection includes systems for safeguarding civilians, such as polgári védelem (civil defense) and katasztrófavédelem (disaster management), covering risk reduction, emergency response, and recovery.

- Private and organizational protection: védelem also denotes personal protection, data security, and physical security for individuals and organizations.

- Sports: in team sports, védelem describes the defensive side or unit of a team.
