Växelströmstillförsel, often abbreviated as AC supply, refers to the method of delivering electrical power using alternating current. In this system, the direction of the electric current reverses periodically. This is in contrast to direct current (DC) supply, where the current flows in only one direction. Växelströmstillförsel is the standard for power distribution grids worldwide due to its advantages in voltage transformation.

The fundamental principle behind AC supply is the alternating nature of voltage and current. This oscillation is typically sinusoidal, meaning the voltage and current follow a sine wave pattern over time. The frequency of this alternation, measured in Hertz (Hz), indicates the number of cycles per second. In most of Europe and many other regions, the standard frequency is 50 Hz, while North America and some other countries use 60 Hz.

A key advantage of AC supply is the ease with which its voltage can be stepped up or down using transformers. This is crucial for efficient long-distance power transmission, where high voltages are used to minimize energy loss. Before reaching consumers, these high voltages are then reduced to safer, usable levels. This voltage transformation capability makes AC supply highly practical for the vast infrastructure of electrical grids.

Common AC voltage levels for residential use vary by region, often being around 230 volts in Europe and 120 volts in North America. Industrial and commercial applications typically utilize higher voltages. The ubiquitous nature of AC supply means that most household appliances and electronic devices are designed to operate with this form of power.
