Växelförändringar, or allele frequencies, refer to the relative proportion of a specific allele within a population's gene pool. Alleles are different versions of the same gene. For example, a gene for eye color might have alleles for brown, blue, or green eyes. A population's gene pool is the total collection of all genes and their alleles within that population.

Changes in these allele frequencies over generations constitute evolution. Several factors can drive these changes. Mutation is the ultimate source of new alleles, introducing genetic variation. Gene flow, which is the movement of individuals or their gametes between populations, can alter allele frequencies by introducing new alleles or changing the proportions of existing ones.

Genetic drift is another significant factor, particularly in small populations. It refers to random fluctuations in allele frequencies due to chance events. This can lead to the loss of some alleles and the fixation of others. Natural selection, perhaps the most well-known mechanism, occurs when individuals with certain alleles have a higher survival or reproductive rate than others, leading to an increase in the frequency of those advantageous alleles.
